Lunch with Mr. Jerz and Teaching at the University

Today, I met Ryan for lunch at the Record Street Cafe located just off of Evans street.  It was the first time I had been there and the food was pretty good.  It was around 11:30 and the place was empty.  I’m not sure how crowded it gets on a regular week day but the place was cool.

It was great to geek out with Ryan for a bit on blogging and podcasting. We discussed the pros and cons of Wordpress, Drupal, Text Pattern and Blogger. In the “small city” category, I found out that Ryan used to live on the same street that I live on now. He actually recognized the neighborhood from some of my Flickr photos. (By the way, Ryan released a new episode of his podcast in which he interviewed mayoral candidate Erik Holland).

After lunch, we headed to the Journalism school.  As I mentioned on the Twelve Horses blog, I was invited by Bourne Morris to present to her copy writing class about all things Internet.  I thought the conversation was fruitful and I hope I was able to impart some of my experiences on the class. Besides writing for the web, we discussed making money online, content publishing and search optimization.

On the way back to the office, I took some photos of the new Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center construction.

Two New Podcasts

Robert and I just finished two new podcasts. Paula Lee Hobson from TMCC and David Bobzien who is running for Nevada Assembly District 24. They are both very passionate about what they do and I think both discussions turned out very good.

Governor’s Appreciation Dinner

Last night, Twelve Horses had a table at the Governor’s Appreciation Dinner put on each year by EDAWN and NNDA. This year it was held at the Nugget in Sparks. The food and company was great. Jerry from Ben & Jerry’s was the keynote speaker and gave a very humorous, if not well practiced, talk about how he and Ben got started in the ice cream making business.

Kenny Guinn followed with a speech discussing all the items he has accomplished in his last 8 years as Governor. He didn’t discuss the current elections nor did he endorse any candidates but instead focused on what Nevada needs to continue doing moving forward.

All in all, it was a very fun evening.

Ed’s Speakeasy and The Chocolate Bar

On Saturday night, Amy and I went out to Ed’s Speakeasy. It was a jazzed-themed fund raiser for the Reno Little Theatre. The RLT owns a plot of land off of Wells Street and they are trying to raise between 1 and 2 million dollars to build there own theatre. There was a silent and live auction as well as a couple of performers including a dance troop, magician and live jazz band (I would provide more detail but they curiously took down the pages linked from renolittletheatre.org rather quickly). I won the tickets at an AMA luncheon a few weeks back.

The event was from 7:00 to 10:30 PM at a Kerak Shrine Temple over in Sparks off of Rock.  Amy and I took off a little early at around 9:00 PM - it just wasn’t our kind of crowd.

From there we headed to the Chocolate Bar on the corner of California and Arlington.  The place was packed when we arrived.  We shared a chocolate fondue and each had a cocktail.  It was a nice cap on the evening.

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue

L&L Hawaiian BarbequeToday for lunch, a couple of us went to L&L Hawaiian Barbecue. This is a small fast food style restaurant next to Borders Book Store off of South Virginia. It’s in the location where the Wild Alaskan place used to be.

This was the first time I’ve eaten Hawaiian. I got a shredded pork and cabbage type thing. It was pretty good. I’ll definitely have to return to try a few menu items.
