An angry reader of the RGJ wrote:
Recently, the city of Sparks and all of its citizens who pay taxes were held hostage by American terrorists. I’m speaking of the developers for the Lazy 8 Casino Resort.
This group of people decided if the city of Sparks doesn’t give them what they want, they’re going to extort $100 million dollars from the city.
I guess they didn’t realize that by holding the city of Sparks hostage that they also did the same to its citizens. I am one of those citizens and I am not happy at all with their tacticts.
If this isn’t terrorism I’m not sure what is. If someone didn’t want me around I wouldn’t go out of my way to force them to make me stay. This is not good business. It’s terrorism.
Here’s an idea: Let them build their casino… but nobody go into it and all you would-be employees… Don’t go looking for a job there. Let’s let them spend millions building the place and then we’ll watch them go out of business.
How would that make you feel, Lazy 8?
Richard Gerhard, Sparks
Come on. The city signed a contract with the developers. The developers threaten to sue based off the merits of this agreement. Its the individuals that originally made the agreement you should be mad at. To call them terrorists is childish and unfounded.

This time it seems like the residents (broad generalization, I know) are all for a new hospital in Spanish Springs. However, the City Council is upset that Washoe County didn’t follow their processes when approving this hospital. This is the same Council that is accused of not following processes themselves when deciding on the proposed Lazy 8 Casino. So to recap, residents say no to casino and say yes to hospital. City Council says yes to casino but no to hospital.

I think the opposition of the proposed new casino is a bit ridiculous. I can say that because I live nowhere near Spanish Springs or Sparks for that matter (I do have aspirations however). Deidre Pike summed it up best in her most recent “From the Fray“
On Friday, the Significant Republican and I went out. First, we drove to the new Pinocchio’s on Vista Boulevard where patrons spilled into the parking lot and the wait was 40 minutes. Murrieta’s the sequel, also on Vista, was similarly packed. So was the Vista Grille on Disc Drive. Western Village was jammed with guys cashing their checks and enjoying $1 drinks. At the Nugget, folks were lining up for yummy seafood pan roast at the Oyster Bar. Great Basin Brewing Company and Cantina Los Tres Hombres? That’s where we always go.
Who hasn’t had this experience? Not just in Spanish Springs or Sparks either. Plus, just South of the proposed casino is a Walmart, Costco and soon every fast food joint known to man. Development is happening, traffic is increasing and Spanish Springs is changing. Deal with it!

This is one of my favorite Reno/Sparks events of the year. It beats Hot August Nights, Blues and Brews and Street Vibrations. Especially this year after a really bad experience downtown during Hot August Nights. Below are some pictures I took of the event. I recommend anyone interested to travel down for this event - if you’re reading this and aren’t in Reno, you’ll probably have to wait until next year
